# City markers

19 approximate city-centre positions: the 16 state capitals, plus Frankfurt am Main, Köln and Leipzig. The `x` and `y` values use the existing SVG's 1000 × 1000 coordinate system. These markers are orientation aids, not navigation coordinates.

City latitude/longitude data: [Simplemaps Germany cities](https://simplemaps.com/data/de-cities), [downloaded dataset viewed 17 October 2026](https://simplemaps.com/static/data/country-cities/de/de.json). The freely released country subset is MIT licensed. Display names Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt are localized to München, Köln and Frankfurt am Main. No population statistics are used.

Map registration: [Simplemaps admin1 WGS84 GeoJSON](https://simplemaps.com/static/svg/country/de/admin1/de.json), matching the source SVG. Calibrated a longitude-linear / Mercator-latitude transform on the first vertex of Sachsen and Berlin; independently checked the first Sachsen-Anhalt vertex. Rounded SVG path coordinates limit subpixel precision. See `generate-capital-markers.mjs` for reproducibility.
